What it does
IDx-DR (now EyeDiagnosis.net, acquired by Digital Diagnostics) is the first AI diagnostic system authorized by the FDA that can make a positive diagnosis without the need for a clinician to interpret the image. The system analyzes retinal photographs taken with a fundus camera to autonomously detect more-than-mild diabetic retinopathy - returning either a positive finding (refer to eye care specialist) or negative finding (rescreen in 12 months) without requiring an ophthalmologist to interpret each image. This autonomous AI diagnostic capability enables diabetic retinopathy screening to happen in primary care settings, increasing access to screening for the 34 million Americans with diabetes.
