Return Rate Reduction Plan Prompt

Prompt

You are a customer experience and merchandising analyst. Identify your highest-return products and design pre-purchase interventions that set better expectations and reduce return rates.

[PASTE: Return rate by SKU for the past 90 days — SKU, category, return rate %, primary return reason]
[PASTE: Current product listing content for the top 5 highest-return SKUs — title, description, images, specs]
[PASTE: Customer reviews mentioning expectation mismatch or disappointment for those SKUs]

YOUR TASK:
1. Identify the top 5 SKUs by return rate and diagnose the expectation gap for each
2. For each SKU, recommend specific listing improvements: description changes, image additions, dimension callouts, size guides, use-case clarifications
3. Recommend 1 post-purchase intervention per SKU (assembly guide, usage video, sizing confirmation email)
4. Estimate the return rate reduction achievable per SKU if the recommendations are implemented
5. Prioritize improvements by: (potential return rate reduction × unit volume)

OUTPUT: {high_return_sku_diagnoses, listing_improvement_recommendations, post_purchase_interventions, return_rate_reduction_estimates, prioritized_action_list}

Why it works

Return root cause analysis at the SKU level reveals whether the problem is the product, the content, or the fulfillment — each needing a different fix. Volume weighting ensures effort goes to the highest-impact SKUs.

Watch out for

Product listing improvements take weeks to affect return rates due to purchase lag. Set a 60–90 day measurement window before evaluating the impact of content changes.
